Art by Bastet - Web Design Case Study
Art by Bastet is the personal art brand of Luiza Buscariollo-Frehner, a surrealist painter whose work explores the unconscious. figures at the edge of sleep, dreamlike landscapes, and the invisible threads connecting human experience. Despite producing compelling, exhibition-worthy work, she had no online presence and no way for collectors to discover or purchase her paintings. The goal was to build a brand and website from the ground up, one that felt as intentional and atmospheric as the work itself.

Goal
Luiza had a growing body of work but zero digital footprint. There was no place to send potential buyers, no way to communicate her artistic identity, and no mechanism to sell. Word of mouth was the only channel — and it had a ceiling. The challenge wasn't just building a website. It was building a world around her art that felt authentic, not generic.
solution
Strategy Before touching any design tool, I focused on two questions: Who needs to trust this site? Collectors and art lovers who buy based on feeling, not specs. What does the work feel like? Dark, surreal, intimate, layered. That informed every decision — from the black-dominant color palette to the restrained typography and the unhurried layout. The site needed to feel like stepping into her studio, not browsing an Etsy shop. The decision to use Squarespace was intentional. As the artist, Luiza needed to manage her own store, upload new work, and update content without depending on a developer. Squarespace gave her that independence while still allowing for a fully custom visual direction.get audience and gives a feeling of joy and safety during product usage. Also, we needed to introduce the product to potential users. Design Decisions Brand Identity — Developed the "BASTET" identity, drawing on the Egyptian goddess of art and protection a name that reflects both her cultural roots and the mythic quality of her paintings. The logomark is bold and minimal, holding its own against the art without competing with it. Color & Atmosphere — A near-black background throughout the site lets the paintings breathe and command attention. White typography keeps it legible without breaking the mood. Layout & UX — Navigation is simple and deliberate: Home, About, Store, Contact. No clutter. The homepage opens with her artist statement front and center — positioning the work conceptually before the viewer even sees a painting. Photography — Shot and edited artwork photography to ensure paintings were represented accurately and beautifully across all screen sizes.
Result
The site launched with a functional store, a clear brand identity, and an experience that reflects the weight and intimacy of Luiza's work. Within a short time of going live, she made her first online painting sales — converting visitors she'd never met into collectors.
More importantly, she now has a platform that's entirely hers — one she can grow, update, and share with confidence.
Reflection
This project reinforced something I believe strongly: the platform is never the point. The point is whether the experience serves the work and the person behind it. Squarespace was the right tool for this client — and knowing when to use the right tool is part of good design thinking.
